Welcome to the home page of the GAA Alcohol & Substance Abuse Prevention Programme.

The aim of the ASAP Programme is to reduce the harm caused by alcohol and other drugs.

The GAA are doing this by appointing ASAP Officers at provincial, county and club levels.

ASAP Officers will be responsible for promoting and implementing Club Drug and Alcohol policies and organising prevention/education initiatives in conjunction with professional drug and alcohol agencies.

On Saturday March 27th Croke Park will host it's first GAA Alcohol & Substance Abuse Prevention Conference.

This conference is aimed at club members who want to find out how to prevent, educate and respond to alcohol and other drug related issues in their own community.

The day will consist of presentations from 

  • Joe Connolly (All Ireland Winning Hurler) 
  • Christy Cooney (An t-Uachtarán CLG)
  • Brendan Murphy (ASAP Programme Coordinator)
  • John Curran TD (Minister of State for the National Drugs Strategy)
  • Susan Kenny (HSE - Less Pints, More Points Programme)

and interactive workshops 

  • Getting it right: Developing a workable Club Drug & Alcohol Policy (Diarmuid Gowen, GAA)
  • Legally High? Headshop drugs, what are they? (Sinead O’Mahony Carey, HSE)
  • Raising the Issue: How to talk to people about alcohol/drugs (Eamon O’Kane NWAF)
  • In the know: Arranging a Drug/Alcohol Education event in your club. (John Leahy, HSE)
  • Off the ball! Addressing Health & Lifestyle Issues with Players (Aileen Tohill, GAA)
